It is actually an error message caused by the fact that Trıllıan and Arthur escaped Earth's destruction. Ford and Arthur randomly pick out letters from a bag from a scrabble game and they discover that the question is: 'What is 6x9?'. The interesting fact is that 6x9=54 so the answer 42 is wrong (Earth gives blue screen....error message) :)

THE REASON WHY 42 IS THE ANSWER BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS THE NUMBER OF GOUIMS THAT WERE PRESENT IN THE SIGNING OF THE TREATY OF WERNUMUMS.

they asked the wrong guestion. what they were trying to find out
was what is the meaning of life ,humanity, everything.
as for fortytwo thats what they wrote in the script.
