I know it is used to refer to the the landed gentry and aristrocratic families from Boston as well as New England region esp. those with stiff-upper lip (attitude)...the likes of Cabots that British Author Jeffrey Archer mentioned in some of his novels like Kane & Abel and The Prodigal Daughter.

Once in the cast System in India Brahmin Cast is considered the superior cast. (Now Legally the cast system doesnot exist) Therefore the people who thinks they are better off or superior to the others called them Brahmins.. That is how those who landed in Boston earlier called themselves as Boston Brahmins. Cery similar to the present....that the people in hollywood with lot of monrey and influence call them selves Holly wood Moghuls
