They can, but it is a common misconception that it is good for them. Ironically, Goldfish produce more waste than most other fish and are actually the least suited to a bowl. They can live without a heated tank because they are "coldwater" fish, and they can also get air from the surface which is why they can technically survive in a bowl, but the quality of the water is usually very low and can lead to disease and just generally unhappy fish.

Fancy goldfish can grow over 6 inches if given the proper home (comets and other types can grow twice that or more) and are stunted if kept in bowls. The best setup for them is at least a 10 gallon tank with a filter. They're more likely to live much longer and happier this way, and you might get to see them interact and even play in ways you wouldn't otherwise see (goldfish are actually very smart and social, I'm not just crazy, lol). This also saves you a lot of work as you can go longer without cleaning the tank or changing the water.

Can you live in a closet? Sure. For a while you will survive.

Is it healthy, humane, or responsible? No. Anyone who says it is o.k. is uncaring or ignorant. Goldfish are the worst fish to keep in a bowl. They should get to be 12" long and live up to 40 years. Goldfish kept in bowls only live a couple of years and stay small. They are killed by a combination of things.

1. Goldfish produce more ammonia then other fish. Ammonia is toxic and when it builds up in a small, unfiltered environment will kill the fish.

2. Goldies are used to high concentrations of oxygen in their water. Without a filter, aerator and the small surface space of a bowl- Goldies often drowned. If your babies gulp at the surface or stay up top rather then swimming all over- You are slowly suffocating them.

So you can no longer claim ignorance, you have the information. That just leaves uncaring. Do something about it.

Every goldfish needs 10 gallons of water. So your two fish if properly cared for should have at least a 20 gallon tank. I would recommend a filter for a forty gallon. Do a little research- all the information you find will match this. They need space.

They be afflicted by ammonia burns and poisoning, and irrevocable gill injury. -The undesirable water high quality additionally stunts their improve which shortens their lifespan. 3. Goldfish strengthen relatively super. Fancy goldfish strengthen 6-8 inches on an identical time as comets can strengthen over 12 inches. Stunting their improve is erroneous. they'd desire to have sufficient room to strengthen and swim. 4. Comet goldfish can stay over 25 years while saved properly. Bowled goldfish in many circumstances make it an universal of four years, rarely greater, in many circumstances much less. Bettas should not be housed in bowls via fact they too would be effected via undesirable water high quality. they're additionally tropical fish and could be saved with heating and filtration.

Goldfish will keep growing even if you keep them in a bowl, regardless of how much you feed them. Sooner or later, they will outgrow the bowl, and eventually can reach a length of six inches or more. Petsmart recommends a minimum aquarium size of 29 gallons for two goldfish.
