Cultural superstitious habit.

According to Wikipedia:
...this stems from the superstition that "bad luck is trapped at the point where the two fingers meet so when we cross our fingers, we stop the bad luck from escaping and allow our wishes to come true". However, if placed behind one's back, the gesture takes on an entirely different meaning: it is then normally used to indicate that the user secretly wishes for something contrary to what is being stated or going on, or that a lie is being told. This usage is often seen in dramatic terms.

According to Old Superstitions:
...by making the sign of the Christian faith with our fingers, evil spirits would be prevented from destroying our chances of good fortune.

I guess there's the whole crosses-being-powerful bit, which has been around for long before Christianity co-opted the cross. It's like spitting between your fingers to curse evil spirits--just something out of the ordinary to change your luck, I suppose. I refuse to look it up because I used to have a book on superstitions and it made me paranoid because it had all these signs and omens about ordinary objects and it made me nervous just looking around at everything that could bring bad luck. So I sold it and I guess somebody else is paranoid now. Bwa-ha-ha!

When you cross your fingers, bad luck is trapped at the point where your two fingers meet. You stop bad luck from escaping and your wish comes true.

WHETHER IT BE CROSSING YOUR FINGERS, SPITTING OVER YOUR SHOULDER, KNOCKING ON WOOD - JUST WHATEVER IT MAY BE THAT A PERSON DOES AS GOOD LUCK FOR THEM. IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO THIER BELIEF IN IT FOR IT TO WORK. IT IS ACTUALLY ONLY THIER OWN FAITH IN OR BELIEF IN WHAT THEY DO FOR GOOD LUCK TO HAPPEN THAT MAKES IT WORK. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GOOD OR BACK "LUCK". EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON. THERE IS "CAUSE AND EFFECT" FOR EVERY "CAUSE" (THOUGHT) THERE MUST EVENTUATE AN EFFECT.
THINK ABOUT IT.... THIS IS TRUTH. IF A PERSON THINKS STRONG ENOUGH THAT A THING OR SITUATION IS REAL OR WILL HAPPEN...WHETHER GOOD OR BAD..IT WILL EVENTUALLY HAPPEN.

Because luck does not exist, destiny & fate rule
the patterns of our ways, they cross their fingers
to impose superstitious behavior because greed
supersedes luck & when their luck is not fullfilled

Because it is too hard to cross one's toes. I've tried it, but in a pair of running shoes it is just too difficult. However, I can cross my t's and dot my i's.
