The programming block known as TGIF was the brainchild of Jim Janicek. Janicek named the 8-10 o’clock gathering of half-hour sitcoms after the frequently uttered end-of-the-week office refrain.
That original lineup of PERFECT STRANGERS, FULL HOUSE, DINOSAURS & FAMILY MATTERS would evolve quite a bit over the next decade, providing an ideal home for such breakout shows as Boy Meets World, & Step by Step
As the century wound down, however, ABC found it difficult to grow with the audience that had been raised on their Friday evening programming. Cory and Topanga went to high school and talked about marriage; the Olsen Twins came back for a dud sitcom called Two of a Kind; Urkel appeared to be growing a moustache. In 2000, ABC finally pulled the plug on their Friday night tradition. ----
