Great Question one that goes indirectly to the heart of those tensions inherent in most of our society’s and the world’s current religious, political, social and economic crisis’s.

I take your aim and the reasoning behind asking this question was to better understand how conditions, behaviors and attitudes centered on the good of the other can be fostered, leading to greater health and well-being for all.

To take a bullet for someone or in other words to sacrifice one life for another seems to be the pinnacle of altruistic love or actions. A pure manifestation of concern for the safety of others in a totally self-giving way. An instinctual altruistic act of caring love that is the central feature in many spiritual traditions.

What is altruism? The dictionary defines it as: an "Unselfish concern for the welfare of others; selflessness." or refers to it as an "instinctive cooperative behavior that is detrimental to the individual but contributes to the survival of the species."

But, the western world's present nature makes it very hard to practice altruistic ideals or be community centered. As most people operate out of a “tit for tat” kind of morality where any altruistic action would happen only if they were a close enough relative and if that relationship significant enough or if it was combined with a benefit for the individual and greatly exceeded the cost of their personal sacrifice.

This egocentric and downright selfish world view generates from Plato’s view of friendship and love. As Plato’s theory of friendship is only a schema of egocentric self-improvement and nothing more.

The current western world view presupposes and supports a theory of love and friendship that values friends only as sources of utility or advantage. This allows friends and relationships to be discarded once they ceased to be useful or pleasant.

A fear based mind set that allows America’s current neo-con leaders to enact state policies where personal security trumps ideals in U.S. foreign policy

The Ideals of life once preached in the Sermon on the Mount are now totally overridden by churchgoing hypocrites and Pharisees, the practical Sanhedrim of the international Corporate World.

Most people say they would or would not based on being able to think about it. It all comes down to the instant and what is in your true heart. I can only hope that I would be willing to do it that for of my fellow human beings. Circumstances play the biggest role of all, who, what, when and where. I just don't think anyone can say they definetly would or would not.

If I'm actually put in a situation, probably not. I know that sounds selfish, but thinking about it, I really can't do it. I don't know why, but I guess you never really know what you would do until you are actually in the situation.

For my kids, yes definitely. I'd even throw myself in front of a speeding train or vehicle to protect them. That's a given for a good parent.
