Well I had a ferret for 12 years, it was by far the coolest pet Ive ever had. They are almost as smart as dogs, with the cleanliness and litter box training of a cat. The males are big lazy affectionate pushovers and they are really fun to play with. Ferrets can play fetch and they are just the most fun Ive ever seen in an animal.

It really depends on your lifestyle.
Small animals like hamsters, gerbils, mice, etc. make better pets for people who don't have too much free time- although if you don't have much at all then I wouldn't recommend you get a pet in the first place.
Cats and dogs obviously take much more time and money, but can also reward you with more love and affection.
Rabbits and Guinea Pigs are kind of in between, they take more time and money than a hamster, but less than a dog or cat.
Then there's fish, which can be as easy or hard to take care of as you chose, depending on what you get. Bettas probably being the easiest, saltwater fish being the hardest and most expensive.
There's also birds and reptiles, but I personally haven't had as much experience with those and they're not exactly my favourite animals.
I currently have two cats, a dog, eight mice, two rats, a tank of 13+freshwater fish and 30+ aquarium snails, four bettas (housed individually of course), and my sisters have guinea pigs which I also help take care of. I have also had spiny mice, rabbits, and a ton more.

I'm not a big fan of anything that comes into my house and can't clean up behind itself. LOL
My goddaughter asked for a pet recently and I have narrowed her choices down to an aquatic turtle or fish.
Think about what your interests are and how much time you have available. Pets required a lot of energy and attention.
Do you want something to watch?
Do you want something to cuddle with?
Pet selection should be influenced by what you're looking for in a pet. Not just what you think is cool looking or interesting.
Hope all goes well for you.

Rabbits or rats are my favorite starter pet. They are fluffy, effectionate, and love thier owners. Not extremely expensive, except their cage, which should be as big as possible. Both can be litter trained and can be excersized out of their cage. Neither is too expensive as far as vet care, unless you are paranoid like me. They sniffle... I get the keys! For a first time owner, I would get a baby...easier to bond...for a bunny 6-8 weeks, for a rat 5-8 weeks. Make sure they are not sneezing, have watery eyes, runny poop or hair loss and make sure you plan on spending at least an hour a day with them. Have fun!

If you want a caged animal consider a rat. Despite what people might think the so called 'fancy rat' is nothing like a sewer rat. They are intelligent, friendly, they don't bite, they are clean, and come in a variety of interesting colors.
If you want something bigger, consider a cat. Cats are very intelligent, they are fun to play with, they can amuse themselves. You can literally go on vacation for a week and leave them unattended. Keep in mind however you need to clean up after them and they can live 20 years.

Dogs are great! They're smarter and more fun than cats! they are easy to train as long as your consistent and learn quickly. If you'll be gone alot, get a smaller dog b/c they are less likely to make a mess when alone. But if you're home alot, mid-size and big dogs are great! As long as they get some attention, they behave but they don't like to be left alone for long periods of time. Good luck!

A hippo would be cool to own, imagen the neighbours faces when you walk your hippo on the frontlawn of your house.
