I know dental asst. is a 2 year degree from trade school or community college.

If you want to get a job as an Orthodontic Assistant, w/o cert... Your best bet is in a private office. NOT a large chain. The multi-location chain style dentist offices have coordinated recruiting and strict requirements.

A small private office may have more of a "family" feel where they focus more on personality and how much the Dr. likes you. If you have admin/reception skills try to get a job as a receptionist in a family Orthodontist place.

When you have the chance express how interested you are in the procedures. Offer to stay late and help with the sterilization and clean up. Its the lowest job, but it IS more training beyond reception. After a while see if you can help set up rooms.

Do not let your regular job slip! The other duties have to be in addition to (not instead of) your regular job.

Some day if an asst is out sick, ask if there is anything you can do to help. Point out that you have been watching on your own time, have been helping in sterile and set up, and want to learn more. The Dr. Should let you if there isn't anything pressing up front.

Use more opportunities as they come up. If a position opens up, make a case for you as the logical choice. Offer to help find a new receptionist to fill your old shoes. Then you will be all set.

Good luck.

A lot of the time the dentist or orthodontist likes to train his/her assistants themselves. You should apply to every practice you can and your desire to be an assistant might be what they are looking for. I would not waste my money on the training for that if you are able to secure a job with someone who could train you hands-on. You might even offer to make less the first couple of months while they train you... Happy job hunting
I have seen some ads for training that say 9 months
