The protections are there to protect the innocent who have been mistakenly or even falsely accused. That they guard the criminals as well is irrelevant.
A young man that my husband works with was hauled out of a class in college in handcuffs because a rape victim identified him as her attacker. He had to pay bail and hire an attorney. A week later a second girl was attacked and the attacker was caught. He looked very similar, but by no means identical, to our young man and this led to the charges against him being dropped.
I have to wonder what would have happened if the real one had not been caught?
Now it's true that rapists don't deserve our help - but how do you tell one from the other?

The legal and criminal system is set up independent of any victim or criminal, It is a justice system, not a victim system. The criminal and victim are only participants in the system, which will determine the legal truth, as determined by the JUDGE. The JUDGE is the determiner, elected or appointed for his or her ability to discern the correct judgement. Sometimes it appears unfair to both the victim and the criminal. Simplistically, its similar to a baseball umpire. Half the crowd loves his call, half the crowd hates it. It's the only system we have, so mocking it will not change it. Work to change legislators and judges, instead of condemming it as a flawed system.

I wouldn't say it ONLY helps the criminal. After all, there are plenty of people in jail right now that were caught and convicted in our system.
We DO offer a lot of protections to those accused of a crime for two important reasons. First, because our society places a high priority on ensuring that the innocent are not punished for crimes they did not commit. Second, we make the burden on the prosecution difficult to prevent the government from abusing it's power.

Because in our system the criminal is not supposed to be considered a criminal until convicted by a jury.
