BMP is the windows graphic format. It is non standard. In general, it is non-compressed and would be used for printing purposes.

JPG files are compressed. When sized right, they download quickly on the internet. In general, SAVE the original on disk, then modify a copy. Everytime you open to change a JPG file, it will compress some more and degrade.

With bmp, ever single pixel of a picture is stored, so the file is larger and takes longer to load. But since every single pixel is stores, the quality can be higher and remains that way.

With jpg, compression is used, and pixel near each other of the same color (or close to same) will be averaged out. The files are smaller and load faster, but are lower in quality. If you edit and resave a jpg it can reduce the quality further.

Jpg is the most common format on the Internet because it is small and fast and nobody wants to wait a week to download a bmp

Bmp is used for publishing and professional photography because the quality remains constant.
