You can die from heart failure even if you have a pace maker because the heart needs two actions to work properly. First it needs an electrical stimulus to kick the muscle into making a contraction (heart beat). Second it needs the muscle tone to recognize the electrical stimulus and be able to contract. If EITHER the electrical impulse OR the mechanical contraction doesn't work, your heart will stop sending blood to the rest of your body, and if it isn't corrected quickly, you will die. It sounds like the electrical stimulus was there because of the pace maker, but the mechanical ability of the heart to contract failed. Good Luck

The pace maker just regulates the beat, it does not make the heart beat.
