i have a gateway essential 500 and it does not have a network card how do i know what to get

Get a network card that supports 10/100/1000 transfers. The higher the number, the faster file transfer, depending on the network that is.

Also if you are buying an internal NIC (Network Interface Card), make sure that it's PCI. Most NICs are PCI. You can also purchase a USB/NIC adapter.

You can purchase a NIC at shops like Walmart, Best Buy, Curcuit City, etc. If you want to shop on line... I suggest that you shop at www.newegg.com because they have a lot of hardware and they're very reliable. When I built my desktop I did all my computer/electronics shopping through them. Assuming that your computer is a desktop (not a laptop), and that you want wired networking (not wireless networking) and that your computer has a spare PCI slot, then you just want something like this:

The computer store will even install it for you.Don't forget the drivers.Make sure it's a new card.
