this is something ive never seen before and i have no clue what it is so ill just discribe the problem and hope someone knows whats wrong and or how to fix it...
a week or so ago our computer got a virus called a zlob. after hundreds of free downloads and fiunally a 60$ norton antivirus the zlob was removed and we thought our computer would go back to normal. now is worse. in addition to extrordinary slowness not all of our applications are loading and many things such as internet browsers wont open. norton is unable to fix this nor is adaware (just updated yesterday) nor any other method weve yet discovored..ive thusly concluded that this is not the result of a virus (currently, perhaps past damage?) but we cant fix it until we find out what it is...reformatting is our last option..........please offer some alternative...

Try removing the Norton and installing a free anti-virus like AVG or Avast instead. Some of the commercial (thing Norton and McAfee) are so restrictive that they can make the PC run worst then the virus. Because they double and triple check every file when opened, it slows the machine, and they set firewall and other restrictions that can keep you from accessing the Internet.

If removing Norton does not do the trick, then you are probably looking at a reformat.

Try to repair the windows using the original cd
Reboot the machine and follow the instructions to repair the windows

Base on the fact that you are not an expert suggesting more thinks must cause you more trouble than a solution

Other option s is to download a pcfix , pcdoctor or other software of this kind they fix some problems not all but this represend to spend a few dollars and you are not going to be sure that they can solve the problem

So probably you will end reformatting the pc anyway

Reformatting should not be your last option, it is a typical requirement of maintaining a Windows machine - at minimum once per year to keep things running smoothly.

The more your computer ages, the slower it goes, but not because the chips are aging. What makes it go slower is updated virus defintions. I can remember when there were maybe 10,000 virus defintions to search for. Now there are hundreds of thousands, and everytime your computer opens a file, it has to be checked for hundreds of thousands of possible problems.

If you want a useable computer again you can reinstall windows, and NOT load antivirus. That will put it back to its original speed but this is just a temporary way to get things working until you get a replacement.

Sure it sucks but you can thank every moron that ever wrote a virus for all those wasted CPU cycles.

Try to go to the Start menu and then run. Type msconfig and then hit enter. Go to the startup tab and see if anything is checked. It might be so slow because of so many things running at once. If anything is checked, click disable all and then apply then restart your computer. If that does not work then the virus got to your computer before you could. If you have done everything else then it is time to reformat if the start up thing does not work.

Zlob is a trojan not a virus. Did you try Norton's removal procedure?

Ewido is also excellent in trojan removal. They have a free online scan/removal or free trial download at:

Good luck.

maybe the virus messed with your registry. try doing a system restore to when you last remember it working.

Select Start, Programs (All Programs in XP) , Accessories, System Tools, System Restore to bring up the System Restore Wizard. To back up your Registry, choose Create a restore point; to restore the Registry, select Restore my computer to an earlier time.

go to http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/#Top and click on HijackThis Quick Start. Read the entire page. It will teach you how to create and save a HijackThis log, which you can then post on their forum and ask for assistance. The forum members there will be able to look at your log and determine if you still have virii or anything else that doesn't belong.

tweak your antivirus scan to scan within folders. try other antivirus software. sophos is for businesses but they do offer a download scanner of the month. i use trendmicro antivirus which is better than norton. norton has really gone downhill.

I guess your registry is all messed up and totally corrupt. Try re-installing applications and see if that helps. If not, reformatting may be your last option.
