You've already taken the first step. Realizing your mistake is an excellent place to start.
If you are sure that you made a mistake, then I'd say to start looking at your options, and slowly turn things around. It may be a long road back to where you were a few years ago, but if it is the right thing, you will feel better for it.

Don't panic, or lament the time you lost.
Just do whatever you have to do to regain what you gave up so long ago. Take it one step at a time.
Keep at it, and you'll get there.

I am so there right now! My mom died in 2000 and I have been on some wierd, lost road. Decided to go back to school in 02. Graduated in 04. Couldn't get a job. Tried to start my own business last year but couldn't make it go. Now my husband is angry and I just feel lost! Feel like I don't have a "dream" so I don't know what to do. . .

Sometimes night classes can bring you up to speed in a new area or help you find a new interest. Sometimes, you just have to make a move and hope it works. There is little worse than being stuck in a rut that you hate every day. Make a change.

i think always one have to go back if he is on a wrong root...but if u go back u have to start from the start....
that suits to ur life...it is never late to go to the right choice..yes it is u ve to start from the start meant to say u cn not earn enough at the initial level..even u ve become late soit could be a little lower too..but try to make a combination with ur existing job with ur older (what u want to get) u will surely get a high speed on ur right path
best of luck

Take the fork in the road. It takes a lot of courage. But, if you don't you must quit talking about how miserable you are in your current position.
Another thought.... the evil you know is better than the evil you don't know.
