Because some men are cowards, cowards who feel that because they have a penis they have the right to beat on anyone they assume is weaker. My ex beat me, but he was more of a coward because he careful never to hit my face. He'd shove me against furniture, knock me to the floor. Most of the time, I hit him back, and that made me just as guilty as him. What I should have done was left his ***.
I find that most men who beat on women feel that it gives them a sense of control because "some women need to be hit" is their logic.
Sometimes, though, if a woman is beating the crap out of man, he should give her whatfor. I'm not advocation abuse, I'm not saying he should beat her ***, but subdue her instead until she calms down or he's able to call the cops. Some women are crazy like that sometimes.
But men are not the only culprits, women beat on men too. Some women who beat on men do it because they feel that man is weak and the more they pick with him, the better off they feel. Sometimes women can be just like violent men and have rude tempers and go off with the push of a button. The problem is, with women abusers, I've noticed it's sometimes harder to buy in court because not too many people can visualize a woman beating on a man, but it's getting better. In my opinion (and I know I'm about to get ripped apart for this) I feel if a woman is man enough to hit man-that is throw the first punch, or draw first blood-than she's man enough to get hit by one. End of story.

The same thing that's wrong with some women. Some people just want control over other people. Sex is used for control and manipulation. Anger is simply violent fear, and intimidation is used when they have absolutely no sense of genuine confidence or control over their own life situations.

Some people are simply hateful, evil people without conscience or regard for other human beings.

Believe me---it's not just a male thing. It's a female thing, too.

They grow up that way, or are controlling. If they grow up with Father beating their Mother, and nothing is done, then they think it's OK. Bully's are like that too. Insecure people. Lots of answers, depends on the person's background.
