If you’re a dog walker, waitress, senator, self employed or even unemployed, a toothache is a toothache.

And don’t say illegal aliens, because Canada has just as much illegal, yet every single person is entitled and is given free, that’s right free health care.

Why are people walking around without healthcare, uninsured, and completely helpless, and yet we have the money to invade (sorry help) other countries, when there are still Americans working their butts off, without healthcare? How is that possible in such a superpower such as the USA?

really think before you start typing, cus the USA HAS the money to provide at least BASIC healthcare to all its citizen, but doesnt, WHY?

It's the job of the govt to provide for its citizens. no ifs ands or buts.

and i do live in canada, montreal actually, and there is both private and public healthcare, if your too bothered about big brother (which is an american thing) use private, which is much much cheaper than public service in the US. the waiting time in public hospitals is a max of 30min, there is no shortage of doctors and nurses, either!

I guess the US figures that because our average income per person is about 25 times higher than that of those in third world countries, we can afford our own healthcare. There are a lot of things about Canada (other than the weather) that I as an American am envious of. I wish that I lived in a country where we didnt get envolved with other peoples crap so much and stick our nose in others business like the US tends to do. Many people work for companies that do provide healthcare but only if you have worked there for 6 months sometimes even 1 year. Even then there is a deductible. The only way you get free healthcare in this country is if you are in the military or are the spouse or child of someone in the military. I'm glad that once I get married I will never have to worry about healthcare again but its sad that so many other people out there cant even afford to get their teeth cleaned and have them rotting out of their head by the time they are 50. Its a huge disgrace of this country that we allow this to happen. I hope that someday this changes but I doubt it ever will.

Because the U.S. government prefers to spend money on "defense" (actually, on defense contractors like Halliburton). The U.S. government has succeeded in convincing the American public that it is endangered by terrorists. The real dangers to the American public, however, have nothing to do with terrorism. Every year, 100,000 Americans die from preventable medical mistakes...

Also, the introduction of the single-payer system will adversely impact a very influential group of health insurance companies, which are making good money under the current system.

because unlike Canada we have to spend money defense. Canada just rides on the coat tails of the US defense spending. That is why Canada can provide health insurance to all of its citizens, but the taxes are higher in Canada and the healthcare sucks, if you want insurance, go to school and get a good job with benefits.

oh and if you walk into an emergency room they have to treat you, so its not like there is no healthcare at all for these people. I know that you wont agree with me but the US does not have enough money to provide basic healthcare for its citizens, we can barely afford to pay social security

Because citizens of the U.S. have a deep aversion to having the government control every aspect of our lives. Plus, if we had national health care, then the government would have access to all of your medical records, which is sort of a scary thought. Finally, nationalized health care systems are inferior in many ways to the current U.S. system.

That is not to deny that the current system has many inequities, but so does every day life. Unless you also think that everyone's money should also be taken away and given to everyone equally - which would make you a Communist - inequities are a fact of life.

Oh and P.S., it is NOT the job of the government to provide for its citizens - it is the job of every individual to care for himself. The government's job is to set the basic preconditions: law, order, basic rights and freedoms, etc., for individual success, but you have to go out there and earn it for yourself.

If it's the job of the government to provide for its citizens (no ifs ands or buts), where does the responsibility for provision end? Why should the government be responsible for my health care, but not my food? Why should they be responsible for my health care but not my home?

We are endowed with the inalienable rights to life, liberty and the *pursuit* of happiness. That means that our governments responsibility ends with leaving us alive, free, and able to pursue our happiness. They're *not* responsible for keeping us alive, giving us freedom or making us happy.

The people are the government. When you say that the government has to provide for the people, it means that the people have to provide for the people. If you want to change that, get elected and work to shape the world.
