My Betta's water keeps getting this think film over the top and I don't know where it's coming from! I clean his bowl twice a week and after a day or 2 this film always comes back! I was just wondering if anyone had the same problem and how to fix this.

There are a few bubbles in the water, I suppose I should of put that into the question but I didn't think that it was needed. It is also a male, another thing I should of mentioned.

Male bettas are bubble nest builders. They blow bubbles on the top of the water, then they fertilize the females eggs and place them in the bubbles, always guarding them and returning an egg to the nest if it should fall. They create a kind of slim in this process. It's normal and natural and not anything you can do to prevent it except frequent water changes.

I don't think that it's a nest. Bettas build bubble nests. If it's a film of bubbles, then maybe it is, but they usually build their nests in the corners or along the walls at the top.

The film could just be dust and junk in the air. Have you tried covering the tank with a piece of cardboard or anything like that? If you try that idea, just make sure that you're not blocking the air.

Usually when a Betta's water has a film on it (with bubbles), that means they are "nesting" or they want to have babies. Male bettas can't have babies but my male betta has bubbles appear on one side of his fish bowl at least twice a month. I change his water once a week, making sure I use purified tap water. I also wash the stones and plant life that's in the bowl as well.

It could be your water too, if you don't have purified tap water or spring water.

Does the film look like tiny bubbles? Male bettas build a bubble next in preperation of breeding, this is where the eggs would be stored to hatch. It won't harm anything and if it gets messed up it's fine.

If it isn't a bunch of bubbles, it could be that the quality of the water isn't very good, or you're overfeeding. I would bet that it's just a bubblenest though.

The film comes from the fish. :) They use the film to help build bubble nests. I usually just stirred the water every now and then to break up the scum between weekly water changes.

The fish is doing it. Has something to do with building a nest. call your pet store and ask them what you should do. better still get a book on bettas.

Is the film greenish? It may be algae... try getting water treatment drops. Also, you may want to add a small algae eater fish to the tank.
