I post on a message board for the residents of the small town where I grew up, and the conversation there gets very heated. The message board is owned by somebody who knows my dad, and because my dad is in politics, I don't want the message board people to know I'm related to him. This is mostly because some of the people there are pretty hateful and I would hate to cause any trouble for my dad. Dad and I have differing opinions about many (most?) things, but you know how ignorant people are...

Anyway, I registered on the message board with fake information (fake name, address, etc.) and an email address that's also anonymous (fake information there too). Besides being able to determine the city I post from, is it possible for the message board owner or the other posters to find out any of my personal information or identity? Thanks for all responses.

For clarification, just because they have my IP, does that mean they know my name? Why would an internet service provider give that information to anyone other than law enforcement?

Oh yes, they can track you down if they needed to. How do you think they bust so many scam artists and perverts? They start with your IP address and go from there. It's as easy as typing in www.dnsstuff.com.

My husband is a network engineer and it's pretty easy to do.

Yes it is possible. As indicated in the first answer, the IP address could be traced to the ISP and then it is only a matter of getting someone at your service provider to tell them who the IP is registered to at the time of the message.

I guess if they really wanted to know they could track down your IP address... maybe you should stop posting.
