I find them mediocre at best. Not worth all the hype.

First, these two books (or the book and then the series) you speak of aren't everyone's favorites. Lots of people agree that they aren't that great.

I think Harry Potter has done so well because fantasy can be exciting and you really get to know the characters well becase there are so many (however, it's also fascinating to take note that Harry Potter is fantasy and one of t every few fantasy books to cross over in to main stream -- the market of most fantasy books is very limitted!). The other thing about Harry Potter is that adults and children can enjoy this book. There is "something for everyone" in that sense. The books take you, no matter your age, to another world and people like that, that's why people read (ususally) and so it's opening the reading world up to a much larger population. Finally, Harry Potter caught on because it's exciting but then became even more popular because of marketting. J.K. Rowling's story of her own life is really fascinating, she's an interesting woman, the movies are done really well and they're making sure, as a smart marketting move, that every year or so there is something new Harry Potter (book or movie or DVD release). It's like a pop singer who you've never heard of one day and the next day they have 3 singles out -- good marketting makes us want them.

As for the Da Vinci Code, I couldn't get in to it either. I think people like books that create the question. Lots of people believe what the book says (to some extent) and it's fiction (some would argue it's not of course). Then there are those people who hate it and say it's horrible and speaks against God. However, this controvery makes more people love it. It's a fast moving, pretty average language usage, story that educated and non-educated people can follow. It takes one of the worlds most famous painters and one of the worlds most famous stories (Jesus) and puts them together to create questions that are interesting. Aside from that, I think that people generally like a good mystery (I'm just figuring this out because I always thought I hated mysteries but I think I'm wrong).

Both books give the reader what we all want from a book, an escape. These two books just make this escape much more exciting than say Flaubert or Austen -- you really have to be a different kind of reader and thinker to read Hawthorne's _Blithdale Romance_ and enjoy it so much that your sad when it ends -- when things are flashy and quick moving and intense everyone is sad when the story ends.

Mine's not. But I enjoy Harry Potter because they are funny and adventurous. J.K. Rowling's a good writer, but she's not my favorite. But she has the whole good vs. evil thing on lock.

The Da Vinci Code was a fast read and had a lot of excitement and adventure as well. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't my favorite. It was like watching an action movie. Angels and Demons was slightly better.

People like these writers because they are entertaining and people have different tastes. Although I enjoy them, my favorite books usually tend to be more realistic. But some of the books I read might be boring to people who favor Harry Potter and The Da Vinci code.

I don't care for Harry Potter, I actually got bored with the book. Da Vinci Code haven't even bought yet, I personally like a good thrilling detective/mystery or a Mary Higgins Clark book.

My favorite book is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. You just aren't talking to the right people. I can't stand Harry Potter, it's juvenile and boring. It's an easy read and that's why people like it. The Da Vinci Code is a half decent storyline but people are reading it because it's popular.

Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code, is that the one where the little brat gets a box of magic crayons and draws a picture of Jesus that jumps off the page and impregnants his cute little friend? Or am I confused.

I'm with you all the way. While The Da Vinci Code was decent, I really hate Harry Potter and everything associated with it.

not mine. i enjoy those books but those are not my favourite. it's more of like reading for the fun of it. i love books where theme is more meaningful. like 'the five people you meet in heaven', 'tuesdays with morrie', 'a walk to remember' and 'p.s. i love you'. and i am fascinated with books that have the theme of how the lives of those people whose loved ones had passed away. how their life goes on. i love books with this theme. so, harry potter and the da vinci code are not exactly my favourite books.

personally i think the da vici code is very offensive and doesn't deserve all the attention. the harry potter books have so much imagination in them which makes them so good.

if you don't like Harry Potter then you shouldn't be reading at all. the books are very entertaining and they let your imagination go and makes you love the characters because they are real and the magic doesn't hurt either.
