For enterprise web application development (i.e. real jobs, not just playing around) there are only two choices for starting a project nowdays - Java and .NET.

It all boils down to scalability and management of such a complex code base. Sites that have been around for a long time like Amazon, of course will continue to use and develop their custom PERL and C++ CGIs. The advantage PERL once had over other choices is long gone.

Each has its own purpose.

If you are looking at it from a web development side, yes. PHP and the like are far more useful for web apps than JSP or the new Java Server Faces.

For more intense applications, Java is being used more.

first of all Java and PHP has a lot of differences. while java can be used for many different types of programming, PHP is only a web-based programming language.

From my year of checkng the jobsites, I'd say Java is increasingly popular (I have no idea why) relative to php and even asp.
