There are many reasons why people shoplift, and some of the answers given touch on several of them. Here is another couple to ponder......
Shoplifting is a way for the shoplifter to gain power. Power that they may not have in their everyday life for many reasons.
Shoplifting also gives the person a sense of payback for things done without recognition, too. The mentality is that if no one is going to give me what I deserve, then I am going to take something of value to even things out.

Some people honestly have no food - and shoplift only that.
Some people have a mental problem that will lead them to shoplift, even if they are a celebrity.
Some people are just plain crooks, and would steal the shoes right off your feet.
Some people are addicted to drugs or alcohol - and need something to sell to get the money to buy their drug of choice.
Some shoplifters are kids - looking to find just how much they can get away with (or did it on a dare).

Sometimes people shoplift because they are very poor and need to feed and cloth their children. Other times it is an illness and the person doing this does not "need" the items taken at all. These people need help. The ones who do it from being so poor need assistance in learning marketable skills and jobs to help get them out of poverty. Poverty does exist in this country and there are children who go to bed hungry every single night. It is sad our government wishes to ignore our people and try to get others to ignore it as well by denying we have this level of poverty in America. We DO. We have people working full time jobs who live out of their cars or in shelters. There are not enough shelters for all the homeless. Families with both parents working minimum wage jobs and do not have health insurance are one illness or accident away from losing everything. They live in constant fear and stress.

Either cause they have kids at home who need food and stuff and they take things to sell them and get money to feed their kids, they just do it to get money for drugs,or they just like to cause misery
