This question is open to anybody who wants to answer it, but I'd also like to hear what the French think about it.

I know that Chirac didn't say Zidane was right headbutting another player on the pitch -- he actually didn't talk about the incident at all. However, he only had words of praise for Zidane.

"You are a virtuoso, a genius of world football," Chirac said, according to The Associated Press. "You are also a man of heart, commitment, conviction. That's why France admires and loves you."

Do you think he was right, considering that he is the President, a spokesman and an example for a whole nation?

No doubt Zidane is a football legend and he deserves praise for his talent, but isn't sportsmanship equally important?

As a person representng a nation I think he has no other choice but to compliment a good player that represnts that nation....I don;t think it would have been politaclly corect to admit that what Zidane did was wrong and foolish.

Well everyone was praising Zidane after the game. I mean they didn't quite get the head butt thing but he played an awesome game and without him they probably wouldn't have gone into over time to tell you the truth. Zidane was kinda like a life saver to the french so I think that he did deserve praising. The head butt was just a small incident.

The point of his speech was to bid farewell to a National Hero not to chastise him. That’s FIFA’s job. Anyway, I am sure Jacques Chirac has felt like doing the same thing to Berlusconi once or twice.

he shouldn't have said that.

zidane is a talented person, but not a genius of world football.

what a liar.

he didn't even play the final game at his best, so why praise him?? his moves were stopped by cannavaro and gattuso so why did he win the golden ball??? we should headbutt that guy
