If you recall, Forest was a rather "slow" person. So many of the things that happened to him were not of his control; it seemed he stumbled into so many events that somehow were of great signifcance. Some were good, some were bad but all had profound effects on his life.
To find meaning of all that happens to any of us throughout our lives may truly be beyond our ability . I think his mother meant that; irrespective of what we want and prepare for, life will give us what IT wants. The trick is to turn the situation given you into something that helps you. Forest, you will remember did just that , becoming far more successful than you would think him capable of , given his disability.
Ride the wave and see where it takes you. There probably are no true answers to "WHY".

There are many differenct types or kinds of chocolate in that box. Some have cherries, some have cream, some have nuts, etc. But you never know which one you're going to get until you bite into it. According to Forest's momma, life is like that.

You get a lot of different things happen and depending on the type of person you are, how you handle them.
I like peanut butter covered in chocolate; how it translates would be like getting a brand new car.....very good!
I hate coconut; that translates into a C on a test or falling in front on someone I like.....not good at all!
But some people might like coconut; so getting a C might be good for them, and they might think falling in front of the person they like is cute.
It all depends on how you handle problems and good things. You never know whats coming, but can always look forward to the sweeter things in life.

A box of chocolates has a lot of different favors in it. You pick something out and eat it and not know what you are getting until you get it. That is like life. That is what Mama said anyway.

It means that you can't go on predicting your life, because you never know what will come up. You may be planning to take a vacation with extra money you have, but then all of the sudden, your car breaks down and you have to use that money to fix it. You never know where life will take you, you just live it.

He said "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." he means that life has its own twists and turns, and that you wont know what they are until they come to you. this is like a box of chocloates because you never know what kind of chocolate a candy is until you take a bite out of it.

To me, it means life is all about choices. You never know what's going to happen until you make that choice. Sometimes there's bad choices (i.e.: the chocolates with the coconut goo in the middle) and good choices (i.e.: those truffles with chocolate creme & caramel in the middle.....mmmm, caramel......ahhh) oh yeah, like I was saying- that's what that quote means to me. You never know what you're gonna get. You just have to choose wisely.

You don't know what something will be like until you try it.
Just like the insides of the chocolates, you don't know what it will taste like unless you take a bite!
Or .. more simply put ... go for it.

He meant that you can predict what is going to happen to you in your life, just like you can never predict what is inside those chocolates until you bite into one.
