Why aren't moderate muslims more vocal in their condemnation of militant Islam?

I don't think you can get a good sense of what moderate Muslims do or don't do from western sources, particularly media sources.

If what we do hear is any indication, our intervention in the Middle East has resulted in violent extremists moving into erstwhile "moderate" areas there, and at least in some cases, killing people who dare to speak out against them.

If you're referring to moderate Muslims stateside, or in non-Muslim countries, I'm not sure their condemnation would make it into the papers. From the media standpoint, too boring, too many other, more sensational stories to report.

Their religion means more to them then any country , people or standing up for what is right . They are taught from birth that Christians and Jews are the enemy . How do you deal with that ,?How do you live with them ? You won't change their minds or their way of looking at us . In their eyes we are the infidels , the evil ones .
They don't understand our way of living or our beliefs and don't want to . Most don't want to assimilate into our way of life . They want to live as they have always lived , in their own little community's in the US . If something happens that they believe is good in Allah eyes , then they celebrate . If not, they protest with riots every where . Look at how they reacted to 9/11 all over the world ! Most weren't grieving with us , they were celebrating .

The moderate muslims are like the moderate republicans and democrats in the US.

Also, I wouldn't denouce people that have RPG and AK's, in countries that have a questionable legal system.

Put yourself in their position. Would you want to stick YOUR neck out to be become the bad guys next targets?
Think about how many of the 'uninvolved' already get killed anyway...
They are just people who want a peaceful life. They are just in the wrong place for it. Not exactly a new situation.

Maybe they are on the radicals side but don't want us (normal people or non-muslums) to know...so they come out with a half-hearted statement saying that they are against the radicals but in reality are really in favor of them. That is just how I see it.

because they are afraid to stand out at this time. people will have preconceived notions about any muslim standing out, regardless of what he/she is saying.
