I don't know where you live, but there is a species that exists only in Japan called Japanese giant hornets. I saw them on animal planet once. They kill an average of 40 people a year in Japan. They're approx. 1 1/2 inches long, yellow and black. Hornets are actually wasps, and are the most aggressive. Not only are their stingers re-usable unlike bees, they bite as well. Most hornets keep their nests in the ground, but the Japanese variety prefer using TREES. It's possible you're tree is yielding something they feed on. One thing for sure is there is a colony nesting not far away. Check around the property. Especially under eves of the roof. They're stings can really pack a wallop so give them space and call in pest control. Don't try anything on you're own. You'll just piss them off! There're especially dangerous to the verry old and verry young. The bottom line is, you have to find the nest to resolve the infestation. Good luck. Don't linger. This is the time of year they are most active and will defend their nest fiercly.

Go to a hardware store and pick up a hive killing canister. They look like super sized bug spray cans. Now wait for it to get dark as if you do it during the day 1) they won't all be in the hive but will be out getting food, and 2) will be more alert and likely to put you in the hospital. I'm not sure what they are called but if they look like a giant orange/red yellow jacket, they are VERY dangerous. Two or three could kill a horse. So DO NOT approach the nest during the day.

Once you have this spray wait till night, cover yourself from head to toe (just in case) and follow the instructions on the can. Generally stand something like 12 - 20 feet away and unload the contents of the foam in the nest. It will shoot out in a thick foam that is very toxic.

I've done this a few times and never needed the extra clothes as bees generally snooze at night. Still, if they are the big nasty ones I described, I've seen them be active at night. If that's what they are, you should just call an exterminator. In france I know that you generally should call the fire department to remove such a nest. They will generally burn the whole nest and cover up with loads of thick clothes before they do it.

Good luck and be safe.

there are many varieties of wasps. if they are very large the could be cicada killer wasps. the only way to really tell is to capture one and take it to your local extension office. they can tell you what kind it is. you can also call a local apiary. if they can't help they could probably put you in touch with a company that will remove them from your property.
