The man who saw only dirt is the kind of person that always sees the negative side of things. The man who saw only sky is the person that sees only the positive side of things. It goes to show when placed in the exact same situation, two people can have a completely different experience. Life is what you make of it. Guthrie exemplifies the man who sees the sky throughout the story and Lila exemplifies the man who sees the dirt. Dinny, by the end of the story, sees that she falls somewhere in between but she understands that a situation is only what you make of it.

I'm not sure...not familiar with the book...but I would think they're saying that they might be locked up in prison, but they're not missing much on the outside anyway because there's not much out there besides dirt and sky.

On the other hand you can look at it this way. One man notices all the dirt. He's negative. One man notices all the sky. He's positive. Two men place in the same bad situation, but they both see things differently....two men with different outlooks on life.
