Since really the military is in itself a giant socialist program. I'm not against socialism or the military, I just think that it's really hypocritical to talk down about taxation and government spending if you work for the biggest line item on the National budget.

Let's see here, take money from everyone else to feed a giant military complex that produces nothing economic in return.
The Military runs on the dues paid by the rest of society, and for what? With the exception of the war in Afghanistan the last war we really needed to be in was World War 2.
Korea, Vietnam, Gulf Wars 1 & 2 are all based on ideological differences, not National Defense. The Military just sits there and soaks money from society.

Furthermore aren't there more productive ways of spending money then on military training and personnel(Sp?)? I mean this war were in now has cost $300 Billion and actually is a breeding ground for new Terrorists.
300 Billion = 20 Hurricane Katrinas
The most devasting natural disaster this country has seen in probably a century is just one-twentieth of just one of the wars we've fought. And for what?
Military spending produces nothing.

before you talk dirty about the military, take a minute and realize where we would be without them. They have more of a right voice their opinion than you do because they are the reason that this counrty is free. Your question does not need to be answer if you read and understand this!

1. The military is not a socialist program by any reasonable definition of socialism. Because the military person voluntarily sacrifices his freedom, and may possibly sacrifice his life, he gets certain benefits.
2. When you talk about budgets, you have to look at what is authorized in the Constitution. Military defense is one of the specified duties of the government. But none of the welfare spending is. In fact, welfare spending (welfare, social security, medicaid, medicare, agricultural welfare, etc) is probably unconstitutional. Other federal spending (FEMA, Education, etc) is also unconstitutional.
3. The budget is about $2.4 trillion. DoD is less than $500 billion. All the welfare spending exceeds $1.2 trillion.

freedom doesn't come cheep..............you could ask some of the guys that went to Iraq with me,......no ...wait,.......some of them are DEAD, and some are handicap for the rest of their lives.
the sole reason that you enjoy the freedom that you have right now is because of the men and women who've toed the line to protect this country and it's ideals. if the US didn't have the most powerful military in the world to date, how long do you think it would take some megalomaniac to threaten US civilians?
there are some profoundly evil and twisted people out there who want nothing more than a chance to kill westerners, and the only thing that they both respect and fear is POWER. in a way it's kinda funny that you post your question on the very thing that the military helped design and create.........THE INTERNET

Your ignorance is astounding. "The military produces nothing" is almost as stupid as "violence doesn't solve problems". If not for the military, there would be no economy. The only reason any of the rest of us can go to work everyday, is because the military is in place protecting us.

Hmmmmm, of all the things the gov't does, one of two actual legitimate things that it is responsible for is for the common defense of the nation. Otherwise, you have NO F-ING COUNTRY, you turdmonkey!!!! Without it, you don't even get to make your asinine questions and self-answers. It is neither socialist, nor communist, nor capitalist.

Socialism is the redistribution of wealth based off a social control, what the hell does it have to do with the military? The military is not a social program, it is a defense program.
"Socialism refers to a broad array of doctrines or political movements that envisage a socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to social control"

The two are completely unrelated subjects. One is for our national defense, and the other is simply a redistribution of wealth.

My very misguided friend, if it weren't for that very military you probably wouldn't have the right or opportunity to be on-line asking such a question.
