try for the safemode and if not download some password recovery tools and if not follow my procedure carefully. before i need to say u one thing is Windows actually stores its password in SAM(Security Accounts Manager) file which is located in c:\windows\system32\config which shows 256KB in its format and u cannot access it. now see the procedure and follow it
1) first u need a another 2000 computer which should be password protected
2) if u find it boot that system using a bootable cd
3) then u goto the path mentioned above get the file copied to one of ur floppy
4) it is the file in wich friends password is stored in an encrypted form
5) now boot ur system using the bootable cd
6) goto the path mentioned above and replace the SAM file with which u have bought in the floppy
7) now reboot the system
8) now ur windows asusaually accesses the SAM file but it is urs friends file in which it stored ur friends password and ur system is protected by ur friends password which u know
thats it

If you just need the files inside the system, don't really need the password. Connect it as secondary drive and access it happily.

However, you can also use cracking programs by getting the SAM files form the Windows directory.

For windows 2000 we have a OS repair option. Get the winodws 2000 CD and start installation and select the repair (not consol repair) when prompted. all the password files will be deleted.

You can try using a program from microsoft called sysprep which will allow you to restore machine abck to factory and sometimes will reset the administrative password at the same time. Only other option is to reload the machine

try accessing some of the other accounts like guest, administrator, help assistant, and see if any of them just don't have a password or if it is something simple like password, or the user id.
