No.

Some people said Materazzi insulted Zidane on purpose to have him sent off. But honestly, he must be really retarded to do that 10 minutes before the end. He could have done that earlier, don't you think? So, no, the incident happened just because. No tricks.

As for the controversial penalty against Australia, 90% of penalties are controversial, depending on the angle you see them from, and where the referee is standing. Even the penalties awarded to France in the final game and in their game against Portugal are controversial. Only, they happened at the beginning, and that makes a huge difference because it leaves the other team a chance to equalize or win. But the penalty against Australia happened in the end bringing Italy up one goal and declaring them the winners of the game, that's why some people didn't like it and talk about tricks.

Italy doesn't need tricks to win the World Cup. They've done won it 4 times by now.....they're just the very best in the world. ;-)

some of the players did. only the blind fanatics could have missed that. but the players in other teams incl. france were equally guilty. did this help italy win the WC? oh absolutely! many of the games were just marred by too much gamesmanship. seems like no one was interested in playing football anymore, everyone just wanted to bring home that trophy. like it can solve all their country's problems *snort*....what a disgrace really.

Is provoking Zidane considered a trick?

Yes, but not at the final, but at the game against Australia, when Fabio Grosso dived and the referee bought it.
