The most common types are Unshielded Twisted Pair cable (UTP), Shielded Twisted Pair cable (STP), Coaxial cable, and Fiber Optic cable. There is also wireless transmission (IEEE standard 802.11).

actually there are two types
1- Giuded like cables(coaxial-fiber optic,.............)
2- Unguided or wireless and it has 2 types
a-directional(Point-to-point focused beams employing high frequencies)
b-omnidirectional(Waves propagating in all directions using signals of lower frequencies)

I also saw at some college, tcp/ip over homeing pigeon, sure it's slow and has lost packets, in som rural areas, it's faster than the telco's internet!
