Do I need to get a flare tool or can I just use compression fittings?

always use black iron inside the fireplace. the heat of the fire itself will damage the copper .... you should use flared fittings to go from copper to brass then brass to black iron can be threaded.. use pipe dope on threaded fittings NOT TAPE.......

IT IS NEVER RECOMMENDED TO USE COMPRESSION FITTINGS ON GAS!!!!!!

Listen to a professional i"m in the Hvac/Plumbing for 11 years and first of depending on the state and local codes some vent free space heaters are a code violation but if you insist on installing it you should run black pipe and use pipedope, the tools you need are channel locks and wrenches and when tighten always use two pairs one to hold one to turn and always check leaks with a soapbubble solution and remember if you have doubts turn off gas before u start and if still in doubt call a professional

check for leaks, put dish soap on the outside of the connector and gas line (where they meet) if it bubbles up, you have a leak.
