Question of under-estimation? Self-confidence?

People who are smart don't have to tell you. They demonstrate it with their thoughts, ideas, statements, and actions. I do get annoyed when people brag that they are smart. Anyone who goes around saying, "I'm very smart" is either bragging, feeling superior, or trying to boost their self-esteem. So, if this person has been telling me he/she is smart, I am less likely to believe them because I want proof.

It is a fact that humans tend to be more affected by negitive feedback than positive feedback. It takes ten positive feedback items to counter one negitive feedback item.

This is directly related to the humans social interaction of acceptance or rejection. We take in more negitive feedback due to our desperate need to fit in. We are tuned to feedback which would indicate rejection as it once determined our survival. If rejected by the community individuals were expelled from the community. In those times this rejection meant death as one individual could not hope to survive alone.

The need to be accepted, to not break the community rules was vastly important in survival at one time. Due to this this type of need has been brought into a time when it is no longer a matter or physical survival, but of social acceptance and self esteem. We over estimate negitive feedback while disregarding positive feedback. Which is why it takes at least ten positives to counter one negitive.

This is actually a very large area of study and it is really impossible to sum it up in a few short sentences. But I gave it a try and hope it helps you in understanding these dynamics to some degree. Have a great day.

I believe them , but i just like to be modest and joke about it and just walk around it, i don't want anyone i know to feel inferior in anyway. I mean if itold someone that they were smart and they said, i know , i would think " what a snob " or something. If i don't know what to say to ignore it i'd just say " Thank you, i try ..or i try my best or something". Being smart doesn't neccesarily mean you know how to do everything in life, being smart is just an intellectual thing. You could be the worst dresser or tell the worst jokes or be the worst social person, i don't think being smart is that important, so i try to ignore it. There's more things out there to have except brains that require MORE than just brains to get them .

People are just humble.
And sorta selfish. They like it when people say they're smart, so when they know that they are, they don't own up to it when people say they are. Then that person gets a slew of other people to come and tell them that theyare smart. That way they get a whole lot of compliments, and it makes them feel good about themself, like boosting their self-confidence level.

Because they tell you that based on what grades you make or the high vocab you use when there are plenty of unintelligent people who sound like a walking dictionary.
