u cant really give them money, because a lot of times they just spend it on alcohol and drugs, this is what the police tells people. I think you should hand them a flyer to the nearest shelter.

You have to realize that the choices they made in their lives, including the choices they made because "something bad happened to them" was their own doing. Giving money to the homeless does nothing but perpetuate the problem, and many times is part of a scam. If you feel you need to give money, do so to a shelter. Probably the biggest thing we can all do is encourage our representatives to reopen insane asylums. Since the 70's when these asylums were closed, the homeless problem has gotten progressively worse. Many of the homeless have severe mental problems and need monitoring. Based on the past 30 years it seems institutionalization is more humane than leaving the homeless to fend for themselves on the streets.

You can't feel sorry for them, I know it sounds rude. But if you feel sorry for everyone that lives on the street you are going to be a very depressed individual over someone else life, who doesn't care about your life. Most are on the street because an addiction has taken over their life, it is sad to think about. If you really feel bad volunteer at a shelter, and get to know some of them, their is pretty much nothing you can do other than that.

I would give them food or money. I made up boxes at one time that had essentials in it. I went to the dollar store and bought toothpaste,toothbrushes,soap,deoderant,sunglasses,rain panchos,cough drops,emery boards, chapstick,sunscreen,bill caps also a note to tell them I loved them and included a prayer and told them of GOD'S love for them, I included an envelope,quarters for a phone call,stamps and pencils so they could call or write someone for help.I don't care if people think I'm crazy, I do what my heart tells me. Any of us could be there.

I've given them food, cigs, money.
I called the cops on a guy that was beating the living sh1t out of a homeless woman.
I've also fed a few at some of my bar b ques.

I do sometimes give them money. Other times, I will tell them I'll go buy the food so they'll have something to eat. There's been 2 times when they have said - "No, I just want the money, I'll go and buy it myself."

I don't feel sorry for people who weren't prepared enough or had enough self-control on their lives to avoid becoming homeless.

TBH- I would just keep on walking. It's not my fault they're on the streets.
