My laptop is a dell inspiron 1300 (i know, cheap) but i have connected it to my network wireless server before from the same position relative to the transmitter.
When i search for nearby servers my laptop says i may have had my wireless switch turned off.
The thing is, I don't have a switch. I have tried to connect while my other PC was online and offline but no difference - can you help me?

The belkin adsl modem server has one cable connection to my PC. It is plugged in, switched on and works with other laptops.

press and hold "FN" ( between the ctl and windows key) and the f2 key, you should see a radio tower on the screen, if it shows a circle cross, then do it again
if that doesnt work then leave it on and open the dell wlan config tool, and uncheck the box that says somthing like: "let dell wlan thingy mannage my wireless connections

*EDIT* the fn+f2 key is dells universal "wireless power switch" and some dell's dont have them labled, but I guarantee you that it is the said combination, also unless windows is set to "manage my wireless connections" it will always think the wireless is off, however SP2 does tell you that it isn't in control.if dell's quick set has been disabled, or not installed, this may not work, and you will need to go into the "connections " page and turn it on manually.

If your dell has a internal wireless network card do this:

There is a function button (“Fn” in blue most probably) on your laptop keyboard. Find that button and one of the keys from F1 to F12 with a wireless tower sign on it. Press the function and the designated F1-F12 key to activate or deactivate the internal wirelss card.

Also, make sure that your internal wireless (or any wireless card you have) is not been disabled. This is how you can check. (this will differ slightly in how you have your operating system setup)

Start> settings> control panel> network connection and check that your wireless network card is enabled. If it is disabled, right click on it and say enable.

1. Make sure you turn on your Wi-Fi.

2. There is a small switch . . .

3. Read your manual.
