I am interning in the IS department of a large Grocery chain, and I am learning SQL currently as well. My best advice is to find someone who knows it and get them to help you get a grasp on general syntax (a mentor). I would start out on something like C++ or JAVA to learning programming concepts. However, the first thing you should really learn is how to script in Unix, that there is the first step to any IT/IS profession (and its how you could form your SQL into an actual program/script). Good luck.

SQL means Structered Query Language. It is actuallly not a programming language it is a syntax to query databases. You need it whenever you try to retrieve or to put data into a database.
In this way, you need it in addition to a other language when you like that your programm needs access to a database system.
