People read the "real" stories of pit bull attacks in the newspaper. They see the devastation of their attacks on TV News Most attacks are unprovoked with owners who "love" them and attest they are harmless! If they were a family dog, they wouldn't make the news. That is why people do not like a pit bull.

Since this is a breed of dog that has often been trained to fight and/or to harm other animals and people, too, they have a bad reputation. In the past year alone, I've seen at least three news reports of Pitt Bulls attacking children. Also, they are big, strong dogs, which makes them scary to most people.

Because of bad press. They're great dogs if they're not beat, abused, and trained to fight each other.
Honestly, the term "pit bull" covers a half dozen different breeds and crossbreeds. Any dog involved in a biting incident that looks even vaguely like a pit will be called that in the press.
Yes, pits were bred to fight other animals. Because of that, they had to be carefully bred NOT to be dangerous toward people. (It does no good to have a dog that will turn on you after it kills the animal you told it to attack.)

Guard and attack dogs were bred for a specific purpose. Like other dogs, they all have breed specific charachteristics. People that say it's all in their training or "bad press" are mistaken. You can't change genetics. These dogs have a reputation for a reason. To expect them to be docile like a lab is not their nature, it's like apples and oranges. I know, I have seen these dogs "snap" and attack their owners, other people, small children and other animals. Even though they weren't trained to attack, something triggers them and they go off, they can't help it. I've seen it too many times.

Because they are naturally mean tempered and are origionally bred as fighting dogs. This means that they can turn violent at any moment even if the dog has been very friendly for years. Small children and other pets are at risk because of the dogs instinct for the hunt.
But don't listen to me, get yourself one and in a few years let it attack your neighbor kid and get sued and lose everything. "but he's such a nice dog, he wouldn't hurt anybody"

Pitt Bulls are too well bred towards being violent.
My Pitt Bull killed two cats and another dog in one evening.
He'd lived with these other animals for years and turned on them suddenly. I had to have him killed.
I loved him, sat with him, petted him and showed him deep, unending love. I miss him....... but they are genetically violent.

Pitbulls actually have a violent nature, they are a breed of dog very prone to an attack. No matter how much you train and domesitcate them, that violence will still be there in them.

I don't know ... they're the sweetest, most loving dogs you can find. And you're more apt to be bitten by a dalmation or a lab then a pit.

You might get bit by other dog's, but you will probably get killed or seriously injured by the Pitt Bull. It's just in their nature.
