are you really a sangoma? anyway, in a culture that is terminally extraverted and materialistic the words shallow, and superficial, soulless and self-destructive come to mind. is that a help?

I think because it gives a person a chance to escape from their mundane lives.
They can read and watch their favorite celebrity on televising
and get lost in that persons movies or books or scandals.
Of course there are different types of celebrity as well.
Now alleged stars come and go as quickly as day turns to night.
The quality of entertainment has changed as well.
I rarely watch TV any longer and prefer to watch older movies.
I think it has to do with the fact that now anything that comes out of Hollywood, has to conform to a marketable formula.
It's a business after all.
For whatever reason now I'm not impressed with the actors and actresses getting the parts. Pretty light weight i would say.
Most of the written material is either a remake
or something put together after three or four months of focus group meetings
The movie business is a business and the Big Studio
star factories are long gone
Now we have celeb's like Brittany spears, Madonna, Paris Hilton
and other no talent people
plastered across magazines and TV shows
offering their opinions on politics etc
its laughable

Your question "Why are Americans so obsessed with Celebrity? is a good one.
I understand your question, but need to caution that you are catagorizing "Americans" - all Americans as being obsessed with celebrity. This is not the case.
I could care less, nor have I ever watched any red carpet award show, nor will I.

For some, it serves as a distraction from their everyday lives. It's amazing to me that more people are concerned about seeing a Hollywood's couple baby than with all the soldiers who are dying everyday. It seems like priorities are really mixed up.

Good questions. A better question is why do americans listen to what celebrities think about war, politics, economy, healthcare, and other public policy? It's too wierd!

Am an American citizen and am not obsessed with celebrity. As for others, I hope they are above the vanity of envy.

Dude, not nearly as bad as the Brits... they idolize people who know people who dated people who were stars!!! It is absolutely sick!!! At least America only has a few no talent hacks they worship (Thinking Paris Hilton for one).
