I think centers will survive. What will change is the skillset that is used to determined who plays center. I think the international game is beginning to influence the American game, and their 7 footers tend to be more mobile. I think centers will now be required to play more like traditional power forwards - have a jumpshot, be able to defend, but still be required to rebound and block shots. I think power forwards will be required to add range to there shots, become more mobile, and quicker. Almost like stronger, better rebounding small forwards.
I think it's a good thing that the game, players, and position requirements are evolving. Who really wants to see a big guy standing in the same spot waving for the ball? If you want the ball, get open and call for it! It creates more player movement and opens up the opportunity for more ball movement.

Yao Ming ended the season pretty solid, Emeka Okafor is a good center, just plays on a bad team, Kwame brown also finished the year strong for the Lakers. I don't think the center position is dying, maybe changing a little bit. I think Dwight Howard and Amare Stoudamire are legit centers, I mean they can't shoot from the outside like Dirk, so they have to rely on low post quickness and athleticism. LaMarcus Aldridge will be a solid NBA center as well.

I think the Center is still there.. We have alot of Centers in the NBA, Your just seeing the past of the Centers, Centers are evolving, Their more faster and can shoot long range jumpers now, like Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan, etc.
So I don' think the position Center is dissapearing, Just accept the fact that it evolved.

Once Shaq is gone, that's it... the last of the true centers.
And I don't agree that players are becoming better... being more specialized (which today's players are) doesn't necessarily make you a better player... one of the reasons our pros get their asses kicked in international competition is because we don't have enough all around players...
Jeez, all it takes is someone like Dwayne Wade to come along and be able to do more than one thing, and all of a sudden, he's the next Michael Jordan...
Today's NBA features shooting guards who can't put the ball on the floor (most of 'em were forwards in college), point guards who can't shoot, centers who can't shoot and who can't rebound and who stand around and get dunked on... You have a very few players who can do more than one thing, and they stick out like a sore thumb...

I wouldnt say its going extinct its just hard to find guys that big that have asthleticism. GMs are going for more athleticc scoring types because its been working. If a true center comes around most teams will be salivating for him because few teams will be able to cover him.

I don't think a "true" center will ever exist anymore. I think they'll be a 5 man, which in the present and future is "powerful, aggressive forward", not center.

Sports evolve because players get better, faster, and are able to jump higher. Workouts change and teams change their playing styles. Look at Amer. football. Linemen still have the same function, they just have more muscle and are a lot faster to cover more ground.
