It depends upon the couple and there relationship, some are more into contact than others. That is just his way of helping her with what she is crying about or asking for forgiveness.

I do not know the woman. Most times when women cry the last thing they want is someone to touch them. It all depends on why she is crying. The next time she is not crying ask her what can I do to help you when you are crying. This will give you the answer you want. During the cry let her go and just sit quietly in support and ready to recieve what ever comes your way. She may not be mad at your directly maybe just something you did or didn´t do.

If a man's wife is crying he should do anything she says, or rub any part of her that is exposed... right up until she turns and screams that you aren't paying any attention. then you stroke her hair away from her face, that seems to focus the mind away from the eyes (crying) and refocus it to the brain (mind) where all the tears are coming from really anyway. if she's crying, try putting your arm around her and asking what is wrong, then ask her to see if a belly rub would make her feel better. Personally, belly rubs make my tummy hurt.

Only if this is something you KNOW for a fact she finds to be a comforting gesture. Otherwise, rubbing her shoulders, her back or hugging her would be more appropriate ... she's not a Basset Hound after all!
