take it to the dry cleaner's

The dry cleaners will do a fine job, but there really isn't a best way. Ties don't do well with washing and pressing because of their construction, so you should avoid doing it if at all possible. I have ties that I have never ever washed or pressed, and they look brand new.

Sometimes you just have to, though, because of a food spill or sweat stains (I teach ballroom dancing so it's very common for me to sweat while wearing business attire). Some people hand-wash, some dry clean, some even undo the stitching, wash the tie separate from the internal structure, and sew it back up again. Personally, I just use the dry cleaners but do it as rarely as possible.

Same is true of suit jackets....it's just best to avoid doing it. You can save yourself a lot of money over time if you never ever let your ties and suit jackets lie around...they'll last longer and look better. You can be as sloppy as you want with anything else, but ties and suit jackets should live on tie racks and hangers no matter what.

Another vote for the dry cleaner. You could try some of the home "dry cleaner" products if you have a bunch of ties to clean. If you have just one tie, take it to the cleaner.
