-I am not sure what dje says is correct, and I already thought of that one, but here ays the conundrum and I was confused by this too, because if all you have to do is kill his heart (by stabbing it)then all those who have debts to Davey Jones are free, as is Will's desire to free his father of his debt....so it is a bit confusing and convuluted.

It's his bargaining chip with Davey Jones. It is the one thing that he can offer to Davey Jones to get out of his deal with him. Remember Sparrow sold his soul to Jones for 12 years of being the Captain of the Black Pearl. So with the heart, he can make a deal with Jones to get out of the deal, or now perhaps to get the black pearl back, but he has got to get the heart back.

because he has the black spot on him. that means the kragen/kraken will come after him until he gets the black spot off of him. he thinks that if davey jones' heart is destroyed then jones will die and he will be eternally with the black spot. but if he gets jones to take the black spot off first he will be safe.

Because he can't go anywhere until he's stopped the Kraken from trying to kill him. Once he has the heart, he can control the Kraken and resume pirating.

dje was right....it was a bargining tool. He could get out of his deal with Jones by trading him his heart back.
