Absolutely. Aside from using SDI to scare the Soviets, I believe he envisioned a time when an upstart or rogue nation would get the idea to try and nuke a US city and he saw SDI as a shield against a few missiles.

I saw a gentleman speak about this just recently. Lt. Col. Robert M. Bowman, Ph.D. (USAF, ret.) directed all the "Star Wars" programs under Presidents Ford and Carter. He emerged as an early public critic of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) during the Ronald Reagan administration and, with the support of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, became the leading opponent of Reagan's Anti-Satellite (ASAT) weapons and "Star Wars" weapons in space. Anyhoo, he claims that this was an offensive move, not a defensive one.

Reagan was a great president and a visionary. The threat of so many countries having nuclear weapons, especially a country like North Korea, with a leader who is an absolute nutcase, is frightening.

SDI was a great idea and remains so to today.

SDI is a great idea. Was innovative in 83, and it is now. Granted, the need to shoot down icbm's has been reduced, but the application towards regional or theater wide missile defense is actively being worked on.

You mean the "star wars" thing? I thought it was a good idea then. Why wouldn't you want something in space that would destroy a nuclear missile before hitting its target, especially the U.S.? Never did understand it, but I must admit, I don't know much about it either.

The money wasted on this boondoggle would have been better spent on diplomatic actions. With better diplomacy, we would have fewer countries annoyed enough to lob missiles at us.
