When I went to my doctor's yesterday, I noticed pamphlets on Hypnobirthing. My doc is very honest about things and said that this helps a lot of his patients through childbirth without using as many drugs. I'm not pregnant yet but I'm terrified about the pain I'll have when the time comes. :) Has anyone used this method? If so, do you believe it helped with the pain, did you still have drugs and would you recommend it as opposed to Lamaze-type classes? Thanks!!

The way my doc described it, hypnobirthing is a way to deal with the pain, not just trying to get rid of it. He said it's along the same idea that you can tolerate a harder pinch from yourself than you can from someone else because you're the one in control. It's supposed to help take away the "why is this hurting so bad" and replace it with "I can do this- my contractions are lasting 32 seconds and I can handle pain for that short a period of time" type of thoughts.

I have one friend who did a hypno-birthing class. She said it did help her to relax and concentrate during labor. Really there are lots of different things that can help you do this, just choose one that seems to fit you. I have one friend who had her baby in the tub and several who just used it for labor but got out to deliver the baby. Its all personal. I liked being in the shower letting really hot water run down my back, also standing is really good for moving things along. Its natural to be scared, birth is a total unknown until you go through it. No matter how many people tell you about their experience you don't know how it feels until you do it. However I want to tell you that its not that bad. Yes it hurts, but there are so many other things that go along with that pain that are wonderful. I would encourage you to at least try a natural birth, if you feel during the labor that you can't go through with it that's okay and you can get medication. When I was going through labor I kept say that I couldn't make it and my midwife would encourage me to try something else like walking or taking a shower, so I kept trying and before I knew it my baby was born and I didn't have so much as an aspirin. It was beautiful. My second is due in two weeks and I'm hoping to make it through without drugs again. Just try to keep an open mind.

i have had one child, my doctor told me that Lamaze doenst really do anything. I haven't heard about the hypno birthing thogh. When the time comes just talk to your doctor about it. I will tell you this though the pain was totally worth having my daughter I would not have changed anything. I had her vaginally. It was amazing. I was afraid of the pain too and wanted to just have a C-section but I am so glad that I didn't.

Check out the Bradley method. I used it 4 times and it really works. Only 5% of the people that used Bradley method needed a C-sec. Only another 5% needed pain medication. I did not have severe pain with contractions.

When the pain comes, unless you have been practising this for years...you will be in Pain!

Sure you can rationalize "why" your in pain, and all that is "good and well", but, it aint gonna take away any pain, just make you "know why" your in pain :)

But, the pain will be worth it, when you hold your child, as you will forget about all that, when its over...

I wish you well..

I have not heard of this but I can assure you giving birth isn't that bad. All this stuff you can do now is crazy, just remember back when there was no such things as c-sections or epidurals. You'll be fine, you don't need any of that non-sense
