Because we always feel like we're being judged and we are. Judged might be too strong a word, but we're certainly being scrutinized, checked-out and given the once over. I still do it and I'm not looking for a mate. People are interesting... some are down right fascinating... their speech, mannerisms, choice of attire... I find it all such a splendid parade.

Next time you notice someone noticing you, go over and introduce yourself. You might get the brush-off or you might meet someone really interesting

Mostly everyone feels uncomfortable being around a bunch of total strangers. This is a typical human condition, that happens to mostly everyone sooner or later. I wouldn't worry about it much. Just be polite and smile and treat them well. Friends are strangers that aren't met yet.

Well, um, let's see -- it's because you don't know them yet. It is always nice to have some knowledge of a person's interests and personality when you are around them. But, you cannot always be around acquaintances. Just tell yourself, OK, I am nervous and shy, but they probably are too. And, jump in and say hi or love that shirt, or will you dance with me.

Sounds like a textbook social phobia. It's very common.

Google social phobia and see what you come up with. Paxil is a wonderful drug for this type of problem.

it's normal! the thing is others feel it too. so if you see someone, just smile. do something you like -- order your favorite drink, dance, or say hi to the person next to you.
