Between Durban and Cape Town, which do you think have the best beaches and everything that goes with life on the beach? I plan to go home in January of next year (2007) and wanna visit Diesel and Dragongirl, but really wanna spend most of my time (2 out of 3 days) at the beach. I'm gonna spend most of my vacation in Cape Town (a month). Do you think that's a good idea or should I just go to the beaches in Cape Town?
The reason why I ask is because I need to plan ahead and save up for an additional 3 days in Durbs.

ANY OPINIONS WELCOME...EVEN IF YOU JUST WANNA COMMENT ON THE MAIN QUESTION.

Well if you want to venture outside of the normal Cape Town and Durban I would highly recommend a visit to Cape St Francis and Jefferys Bay, Absolutely stunning, and so much fun, just bunches of young people enjoying their Summer holidays. There is always some sort of night life hapening, plus there are normally free concerts of amazing SA bands and there is also always something happening on the beaches. A great place to go on a roadtrip to with your mates.
Im in Durbs, and all I can say is stay away from our main beaches, they are cool to walk around and check out the vibe, but if you want to swim etc rather travel a little north or south and you will be well rewarded. Nice places are Umhlanga (north) and Margate (south), especially at that time of the year. Cool beach vibes happening there.
Cape Town is fantastic, you will defintely be able to spend a month there easily, although if you want to stay in KZN a little longer then I would highly recommend some time in the Drankensburg Mountains, even if just for 2 nights or so, its absolutely stunning. Well worth it, in my opinion. Lots happening there as well, although more of a chilled out vibe.
But really you will have bunches of fun anywhere in SA. Enjoy:)

I think Durban is great, but too busy you can't even get a parking space. So for piece of mind I would rather go to some of the stunning beaches south of Durban. Check the website that Kim gave.

Cape Vidal - North Coast of Kwazulu-Natal...just so beautiful there! Just difficult to get a place to stay...best bet if you wanna go - try St Lucia that is about maybe an hours drive from there(might be less - it's been yonks since I have been there and can't exactly remember the time it took to get from St Lucia to Vidal), but is really so stunning. Also along the Garden Route from Mooselbay to I would say Hermanus or there abouts ,there is many and many beautiful little places...Tweejongensfontein is just such a place and Boggemsbaai..and Gouritsmond...

OH yeah...thanks for the info on Korea...

I think that cape town's water is verrrrrrrryyyy cold and durban is much better. If i was you i wouldnt go to the beach in cape town, and rather go to anstey's in durban. Its close to wentworth, and treasure beach. Thats an excellent beach to have some fun!

I personally like Durban better. I like Umhlanga Rocks and Amamzintoti the best. Take a look at this link for more ideal tourist spots in the South of Durban.

Cooooolll!
Hey Howsit Porgie?
You wanna visit me and Dragongirl? Now you are talking. Actually all beaches along Indian Ocean (in SA) are great, but none of them beats Margate. Check the pictures below. Margate is just cool. You get everything you want there, and peace of mind as well. I tried to view your page but it doesn't open. Do I need to open unlock mine first? Right you said you'll visit in January next year, so you've committed yourself and don't you dare chicken-out now.

Uvongo.
Its a beach surround by cliffs. It is sooooooooo
beautiful.
Its below Durban.
Rather don't go to durban, as if you want to swim it is practically impossible in Holiday season.

I love anyplace along the Garden Route, and Plettenbergbay and Wildernis are my fravourites. Robberg beach at Plett is beautiful, and on the western side of Robberg Nature Reserve is a beautiful small island and beach...see www.plettenberbay.co.za

I also agree that CT beaches are very cold! How about going to PE? Stunning beaches, very friendly people. Kings beach is nice with lots of different activities.
