I am beginning to think so, given the fact that the Congressional Republicans have gone native since gaining power (unable to keep themselves from spending) and even the President is pandering to the illegal lobby. The Democrats have been washed up since LBJ. I don't know what to do.

There are third parties. And in times like these when large parts of the population are disenchanted, they tend to grow. Probably your ideas fit somewhere between the Libertarian Party and the Constitution Party. But really, if the two major parties deteriorate, any of the third parties could readily transform into whatever the people are looking for.
The real problem is that the two big parties have a lock on the system right now, and until the ballot access laws are reformed, or the voting system is adjusted, it becomes almost infeasible for anyone who doesn't have the endorsement of a major party AND oodles of money to get elected. Personally, I think the Instant Runoff Voting system would solve lots of our problems.

Ever heard of the Green party? Independent? Reform? The only thing that makes this country a two party system is the way people vote. You want to change that, quit talking about it in abstract terms and get out there and be an activist, going door to door just like the dems and reps do and spending money to get your ideas across.

It is hard for a new party to emerge. Every party is just a variation of the two in power now. Plus a third party would have to take seats in the states to be taken seriously. If you cannot get a dog catcher elected, there is no way you will take a congressional seat or the presidency.

will there be drinks or is it byob? Seriously though, parties are all fine and dandy, buu they take away from what representative politics is about. People start becoming loyal to the party and doing what is best for the party and acting along its lines. Politicians need to remember they were Americans before anything else. In other words, sometimes the needs of the country are placed second to the needs of the party.

Yes, since I missed the first two. What time and where?
(J.K. - Maybe, but quite frankly, I haven't thought much about this since Ross Perot ran for President back in 1992. Quite honestly, although my ideology is generally conservative and Republican, any third party that would behave like the two we have would just be a waste. It depends on who would be in charge of it and for what principles they would stand.)

You can't just decide to make a third dominating party. That's why so many have failed. I'm sure the green party thinks they have a good idea, but does anyone else? No. You have to wait for the third party to evolve (I know you conservatives are a little squeemish around this word, but I'm not refering to the overwhelming evidence against Intelligent Design).

I would rather have a true moderate party that is interested in the common good of the country and the people, and not just the rich ones. One that respects religion without trying to force it down our throats. But my idea is a fantasy.....

Look at the history of third parties in this country (Bull Moose, etc.). They do nothing but split the votes. As a political voice, fine. But when it comes to elections, third parties are spoilers.
