Not sure what you mean by "deviate 1/2 its orbit". Earth orbits at 66,000 miles per hour. If it slowed down to half that, it would depend on how quickly it slowed down. You would need Newton's second law to calculate that. F=MA.

Approximating the orbit to be circular, the centripetal force acting on the Earth by the Sun is 3.544 x10 ^ 22 newton toward the Sun.

If the radius of the orbit is to be doubled then the force must be decreased to ¼ of the above value.

Therefore, if we apply a force of .75 x (3.544 x10 ^ 22) newton away from the sun on the earth, then earth will move in a circular orbit of twice the present radius.
