It depends on the dimensions of your tank.
The volume of a cylindrical tank is π·r·²·h, where "r" is the radius (half the diameter) of the tank and "h" is the height of the tank.
If you're using feet to measure the radius and width, the volume will be in cubic feet. If you multiply this by 7.48052, you'll have the volume in gallons.
If you're using inches to measure the radius and width, the volume will be in cubic inches. Like rhsaunders (below) says, if you divide this by 231, you'll have the volume in gallons.

volume of the tank=pi*r^2*h where 'r' is the radius of the base and 'h' is the height of the cylindrical or round tank
substituting v=3.14*18*18*36 cft=36624.96 cft
231 in^3=1 U.S.gallon
so the answer in gallons will be=36624.96*12*12*12/231
273974 gallons

Assuming that you mean a cylinder, then the formula for volume is V = pi * r^2 * h, where r is the radius and h is the height.
Measure the radius and the height in inches (or convert to them), then plug into the formula above. Divide this by 231 in order to convert cubic inches to gallons. (This assumes the U.S. gallon and not the Imperial gallon.)

It's easy if the tank is a cylinder with flat ends. Get the volume in cubic inches by multiplying the area of an end (using pi r squared) by the length, all in inches. Divide the result by 231 to convert to gallons, and you're done.

Volume of Cylinder of radius r and hight h is : π r² h
You now need to know what volume one gallon take. This cubic value is divided into the formula above to know how many gallons will fit into the tank.

To calculate the volume of a cylinder, calculate the area of the footprint (the base), multiply by the height, and convert to volume.
Volume = (pi)r^2 x h
