"Syd" was gone years ago.(Yet will live on through music.)
As his sister said "He is not Syd anymore, he is Roger"
Roger Keith Barrett passed away on Friday July 7th 2006. It is said from complications due to diabetes, but according to obit from local paper ( see link below) it was due to cancer. Either of the two could be correct as Roger had numerous health issues develope over the past many years.
It is ironic in a previous post someone made a statement I find so true.If it were not for "Syd" there would never have been a Pink Floyd, at least the one we know of.After all he did name the band, he did write most the lyrics for their first two great albums (Piper at The Gates of Dawn and Saucerfull of Secrets) He had a wonderful yet quirky way with his lyrics(Bike, Arnold Layne,See Emily Play......)
Once his mental illness( which was exacerbated by the use of LSD) made him unable to perform w/ PF ( enter his school mate David Gilmour) He went on to create a few solo albums , some with the help of Gilmour.
Without "Syd" the band never would have had the material to write "Dark Side of The Moon", "The Wall" or "Wish You Were Here". Most of the material is based on his life.
Granted this is my opinion...you listen to the lyrics on those three albums (we all know about "Crazy Diamond") but really listen to DSOTM.
"Syd" was a very talented person, the Madcap that he was.
Roger suffered in the depths of his own mind and you could tell through some of the lyrics from "Syd"s solo works.....listen to "Opel"
I'm trying
I'm trying to find you!
To find you
I'm living, I'm giving,
To find you, To find you,
I'm living, I'm living,
I'm trying, I'm giving

Once again...my opinion.
As I posted prior- There is a fine line between genius and insanity! So true.
And it is also sad that it takes a tragedy for people to take notice of something wonderful that was there all along.
There are a number of web sites and groups that have been around for years for Barrett fans. Also many books that have been around on Mr.Barrett.
Yes, it is another loss for the world of Rock ...yet as stated earlier- "Syd" was gone years ago.
Roger Keith Barrett may he rest in peace

What, what about him?

He was the founding member of Pink Floyd. It is very sad that he is gone. Too bad that he spent so much of his life as a recluse and away from the band. He had such a gift, I wish he had spent these years producing or encouraging new music some how.

What about him? He was an early member of Pink Floyd, but left the band and became a recluse. For years, they mailed him royalty checks for their early music.

He's dead. He's gone. He retired from music way back when in the 70's and lived a quiet life at home, spending most of his time painting and gardening. The poor fellow sadly burned out too quickly, he had immense talent and potential. The drugs really seemed to speed up his mental breakdown. But his music will live on forever!
