That motor isn't known for power, nor is it the best gas sipper out there, but I have seen them go over 175k. You should have no problem towing a jet ski with one. The most common problem I have seen with these motors has been the TPS, with MAP sensors following a close second. Both are cheap and easy to repair. The Ford Ranger, however, has been somewhat unreliable and troublesome in base motor form. The most common thing I have seen with these is EGR valve problems with Catalytic Converters/Oxygen Sensors right up there with them. Unfortunately they are all related and 1 can cause the other to go bad.

yes there pretty good engine,s i run a repair shop,,and don't get too many of them to repair,,usually just tune up,,and oil change,s,,the only major thing that i have seen happen to them id the timing chain wear,s out really fast in them,,i have had a few in the shop that actually broke the chain,s and left the driver stranded ,,but then i have also had a few ford,s that have done the same thing,,,if your buying a low mileage vehicle,,either make would be OK,,the ford seem,s to always,s have more power than the Chevy,,but actually they are rated about the same, you should be OK on either choice,,just as long as there not really high mileage,,hope this help,s.

It is an ok engine. It will be a little weak if you get into a good strong wind, but it will be reliable and should provide good milage if you don't push it too hard.
